      ■ Introduces stable power supply system for voltage and frequency fluctuations to large-scale power grids

LS Materials announced on the 15th that it has developed a high-power load control system (Enhanced STATCOM) to stabilize power grids.

This system uses an ultra capacitor (UC), a large-capacity energy storage device, to maintain a constant voltage of the power grid and supply power stably.

The UC injects power into the power grid or absorbs power. Unlike regular batteries, UCs have rapid charging and discharging speeds, so they can quickly compensate for voltage and frequency fluctuations.

These systems are mainly used in large-scale power grids where voltage changes rapidly depending on weather conditions, such as with wind power and solar power generation.

This type of system was first developed in Korea by LS Materials. It is the third after Germany and China. Because it is based on mid-to-large UC technology, the barrier to technological entry is high.

As the scale of renewable energy generation increases, there is a growing demand for systems that can use megawatt-level power within 0.1 seconds. Such systems are starting to be introduced to large-scale power grids in Europe, including Germany, and the market size is expected to grow rapidly to over 100 billion won in 2026 and 500 billion won in 2030.

The company believes that this development is significant in that it the company can enter the market in the early stages of market formation. In addition, the company expects to increase sales by selling control systems, which are a higher value-added product than single cells.

“We are in discussions with global power equipment manufacturers in Germany, Japan, and the United States for supply,” said Hong Young-ho, CEO of LS Materials. “As there are only three or four companies in the world that possess this technology, sales will grow rapidly along with the market growth.“
