LS Marine Solution announced on the 25th that it plans to invest KRW 20 billion to remodel the GL2030 submarine cable laying vessel and expand its loading capacity from 4,000 tons to 7,000 tons, which will make it the largest in Korea.
The core of this modification is doubling the capacity of the carousel, a type of submarine cable storage and management equipment. The carousel is a key mechanism that determines the amount of cable a vessel can transport and lay at one time, and this improvement is expected to increase the vessel's submarine cable laying capacity.
This is expected to significantly improve work efficiency by maximizing the GL2030's load capacity while extending the work period per departure from the existing two weeks to up to one month.
LS Marine Solution plans to enhance its competitiveness by proactively remodeling the vessel ahead of the implementation of large-scale offshore wind power projects in the West Sea, including near Anma (532 MW), Taean (500 MW), and Shinan-Ui (400 MW).
“The modification of the GL2030 is a strategic investment in response to large-scale offshore wind power projects,” said Kim Byeong-ok, CEO of LS Marine Solution. “We will further strengthen our market position by increasing the competitiveness of our vessel.”
In particular, the GL2030 is a cable laying barge (CLB) optimized for cable laying in shallow seabeds, such as in the Southwest Sea. The government plans to expand offshore wind power generation from the current 124.5 MW to 12 GW by 2030, centered on the Southwest Sea, and this is expected to lead to growth for LS Marine Solution.
In addition, as the offshore wind power market is growing rapidly in Asian countries such as Taiwan and Vietnam, LS Marine Solution plans to introduce a new vessel within the year and begin full-scale entry into these overseas markets.
